Lloyd was not satisfied with the laborious and costly method Lloyd was required to hand-weave furniture made from wicker. It was also not durable enough for outdoor use. This led him to pursue an easier method to create Wicker furniture using standard materials, but with greater strength and significantly less effort, thus cutting costs and increasing the appeal of the product.
A Little History about Marshall B. Lloyd
Marshall B. Lloyd lived from March 10, 1858 – to August 10, 1927. He was an acknowledged manufacturer and inventor. In his early years, Lloyd moved around different locations across Canada and the United States. He worked in a variety of positions. He was successful at a variety of things, but failed in others. Lloyd was a rare example of adversity and initiative. In his time at work, he developed a weighing scale for use of farmers. For the use of the machine he developed for the weaving of wire doors mats and table mats. Lloyd was rewarded part interest in the C. O. White Manufacturing Company. The company later developed a patent-pending machine for weaving wire spring mattresses, which became very successful. This enabled him to buy out the White company in 1900 when he founded the Lloyd Manufacturing Company.

Lloyd Manufacturing was involved in the creation and manufacturing of various products. He improved the process of manufacturing for wire wheels that could be used in baby carriages. In 1910, he received his next patent. He invented a machine that could produce thin tubes from steel ribbons, and the machinery used to create wickerware. The looming process used to make wicker fabric included wire reinforcing for added strength. Lloyd’s method consisted of making the woven sheets of the fabric wicker separate from frames. Instead of hand weaving the wicker cane , Lloyd welded it onto wooden frames, The wicker fabric was cut to size, attached to the metal frames, and woven trim pieces were used to smooth the edges.

In 1921 the Heywood-Wakefield Co. took over control of Lloyd Manufacturing. In 1982, Don and Dudley Flanders bought Lloyd Manufacturing from Heywood-Wakefield. They formed Lloyd Flanders. Lloyd Flanders began making contemporary loom-wicker furniture that can be used outside.
This new loom process would take about 75% less time than the hand-weaving process. A baby carriage which normally takes a weaver one day to make would now take just 15 minutes to create using the Lloyd Loom process. A single loom machine could replace thirty weavers.
The background of Lloyd Loom Manufacturing Process
Marshall Lloyd began manufacturing baby buggies made of wicker using the looming method in the year 1917. Through the Heywood-Wakefield owners and the Heywood-Wakefield owners, the Lloyd Loom process expanded into a full-fledged production of furniture made of wicker.
Marshall Burns Lloyd developed the process by which cellulose fibers are weaved into the fabric. This is a different method to wrapping cane around frames or weaving intricate designs. Every piece of Lloyd Loom wicker furniture is handmade using the same technique as the original 1917 creation. However, advanced technologies since 1982 have led to the possibility of creating an unbroken strand of fabric that will not break, crack, or peel resulting in a consistently smooth weave.

Lloyd Loom Frames
Metal frames are fashioned using either stainless steel or aluminum tubing. These two metals were chosen in order to avoid rust causing premature degradation. The tubes are cut using hydraulic presses and forms in order to form the desired shapes. Before assembly, the frames are cleaned and cleaned and prepared.

The wicker fabric will then be stretched to the required length and then stapled to the frames of steel.
Every piece of fabric is sewed to the frames made of aluminum by skilled artisans. They shape and weld the frames in the factory. The edges are then trimmed, and wicker braid that has been pre-woven is fitted and stapled in place manually to ensure that each piece is perfectly finished leaving no rough edges or unpleasant edges.
